Sony's Blu-Ray burners reach market
Take the standard DVD platform but use near Ultra-Violet lasers instead of the original near Infra-Red and you gain a whopping increase in capacity. The shorter wavelength allows the bits to be packed closer together so instead of 4.7GB you are looking at 23.3GB.
These initial units are aimed at business and enterprise users since they cost about $3.5K but I remember not too long ago when a standard 1X DVD burner was over $10K so this should drop.
