Iwo Jima -- 60 years ago

A wonderful set of photographs of the battle for Iwo Jima and the flag raising on Mount Suribachi. The Marines landed Feb. 19 making today the anniversary of the beginning of this major turning point in World War Two. Keep scrolling -- these are in a forum and some of the other readers posted photos and commentary too. Here is one:

Hey, I noticed the hand written caption claiming the marines were under fire during the walk up Suribachi for the first/second flag raising. I had always assumed the same, until reading recent book by one of the sex famous flag raiser's sons. The book is "Flags of our Fathers", and in it it goes into quite a bit of detail on the six men, as well as the battle of Iwo itself...with accounts from many involved. According to this book, and the accounts of the flag raisers themselves, the walk up Suribachi that day went without a hitch, no fire taken. The previous days however, and the days to follow, were hell on earth. If you're really interested, I would check the book out. It truly has changed my view on certain things, and solidified my beliefs on others.
