I had been blogging about the Station Fire as it threatened the Mt. Wilson Observatory.
What I did not know is that this fire used for the first time, a modified Boeing 747 that holds up to 24,000 gallons of retardent and releases it via a pressurised delivery system so it can cover a three mile long swath.
Here it is shown doing some test passes over a grid:

Amazing! You know, though, that the 747 has been around for a long time when some are getting cheap enough for these guys to be buying them.
A rig like that would be fun at the beach, wouldn't it?
