When you graduate from Law School and pass the Bar Exam, you then need to apply for a license to practice law. Even if you give up your practice, maintaining the license is a simple matter of a fee and some administrative paperwork. Here is the Lawyer Search website for the Illinois Attorney Registration Commission. Plugging in "Obama" as last name gives this result:
